Put a Chicken in Your Backyard and Improve Your Cholesterol

A couple months ago, after nearly a month of preparations, I bought 4 chickens to keep in my backyard!

Why do you care?  Well, you may not… but I did this after reading about the health benefits of eating free range eggs.

If you do your own research on this, you’ll find conflicting stories.  According to the USDA, free range eggsM are no healthier than the eggs you buy at the store.  In an independent study, however, www.motherearthnews.com found that there is, [...]

Cinnamon Cholesterol Information

Some research has shown that there is a cinnamon cholesterol remedy.  It seems that in some studies, using dietary supplement-grade cinnamon tablets (not just sprinkling cinnamon on your food) can help your body fight high cholesterol.

Cinnamon powder should not just be sprinkled on your food in order to utilize the health benefits of the cinnamon cholesterol remedy.  It is important to utilize cinnamon in tablet form because saliva actually destroys cinnamon and renders it ineffective.

Know your Cholesterol Drugs/Medications: Resins

As a continuation of my series of posts on different types of drugs and medicines prescribed to lower cholesterol, I’d like to discuss a second type of these:  Resins.

Resins, which are also called bile acid sequestrants, help you by lowering your LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein), or “bad cholesterol” levels.  Some experts cite that using this type of substance to lower LDL cholesterol can result in a reduction of 10-20% in “bad cholesterol” levels.  Resins are ususally prescribed along with other cholesterol-lowering [...]

Know your Cholesterol Drugs/Medications: Statins

It is vitally important for patients to understand the drugs and other medications that their doctors prescribe to them.  For this reason, I’d like to take a moment to discuss the types of drugs and medications that are prescribed by doctors for lowering cholesterol.

Statins, whch are also referred to as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors,  help your body to slow down the rate at which it creates cholesterol. Additionally, this type of drug helps lower cholesterol levels by removing cholesterol from your [...]

How to Raise Your HDL “Good Cholesterol”

As we have discussed, HDL cholesterol is the “good cholesterol” that actually helps get rid of the “bad cholesterol“… it is believed to “scour” the walls of blood vessels, cleaning off the bad stuff and transporting it to the liver.

I put together a list of foods that you can add to your diet to raise your HDL, or “good cholesterol” levels.  Here are some other ways that can help, besides food:

Engage in aerobic exercise – Studies have found that engaging [...]

Foods That Help to Raise HDL Levels

When I went to the Doctor and discovered that I had high overall cholesterol, I was also told that my HDL (aka High Density Lipoprotein or “good cholesterol“) was really low and my LDL (aka Low Density Lipoprotein or “bad cholesterol“) was really high.  I started doing some research about how I can do something about this.  I thought I would share some ways that you can increase your HDL.

Monounsaturated Fats (also referred to as MUFAs) are great for raising [...]

HDL – Good Cholesterol

“HDL” stands for High Density Lipoprotein.  That’s the “good cholesterol.” It’s like a transport in the blood that moves bad cholesterol from the blood into the liver.

It’s important to consider your HDL level in relation to your LDL (that’s the bad cholesterol that contributes to poor health).

In order to find out your HDL/LDL ratio, divide your LDL into your HDL.  The best ratio of HDL/LDL is at least 0.4.

Cholesterol Lowering Medications

There are many cholesterol-lowering medications on the market and many of them have proven to be quite effective.

The American Heart Association has a good bit of information for people who are considering going on cholesterol-lowering medicines, as well as other sites.  There are many prescription drugs and medications available to help fight high cholesterol as well as many homeopathic solutions for lowering cholesterol, herbal remedies, and alternative medical treatments for reducing cholesterol.

Some of the links below are links that I’ve [...]

Cholesterol Friendly Living

Let’s face it.  Most of us are not up to par when it comes to living a heart-healthy lifestyle by eating healthy and exercising.  When I went to the doctor a couple months ago, I discovered that I, an average-weight male in my early thirties, had dangerously high cholesterol.  My doctor said it was because I was eating the wrong things and not exercising.

So here’s the deal.  I’m setting up this website so that I can share with the world [...]
